This mid century Brutalist wall sculpture is an unique and unusual design. Although made in the manner of Curtis Jere, this is possibly a one of a kind piece. As it stands, we do not know who the artist was. Rectangular pieces of copper sit on top of copper spikes. It is a medium sized piece that is striking and a great conversation piece. We refer to it here at Mid-centuryOnline.com as ‘The Mouth’ but it is open to interpretation. As was often the case with mid century Brutalist art works such as Curtis Jere, MARC Creates and William Bowie, there was a wonderful use of metals and textures.
Brutalism as a term originated from a style of Architecture, but is often used in reference to the work of Artists influenced by Art Brut. This Art Brut or raw style, was defined by French Artist Jean Dubuffet as ‘a raw expression of a vision or emotions, untramelled by convention’. This art encompassed a wide spectrum of styles and was made outside the academic tradition of fine art.
